When I decided to write an article in defense of the small house, it was hard to know where to start, because there are so many reasons why I think small is beautiful when it comes to houses. I freely admit that I love living in small houses – in fact, my ideal abode would fit many people’s idea of a tiny house. My previous home in Portland was only 420 square feet, and for me, a single woman, it was perfect. My current home, which is huge by comparison but still under 900 square feet, seems too big to me.
Now that you know my personal prejudices towards smaller homes, I’ll give you a few reasons for my unusual preferences.
First, smaller homes are more affordable for the average American worker. I just did a quick search through the real estate listings for the Portland Oregon metropolitan area for all homes for sale under $120,000. I chose that price range because the average annual wage in that area is around $37,000 a year. Since home prices have risen much faster than wages, a single buyer in the Portland area could only afford a 30-year mortgage under $100,000 at current interest rates, but the median price for a home in the area went up to $297,000 in May 2007. Yes, by my calculations, the average worker can afford 1/3 of the average house in Portland. But that doesn’t mean that you have to do without a house altogether, as many people assume. When the sebum discharged by skin glands comes in contact with bacteria, it causes an infection, which is known as acne. As the condition heals, collagen, which is a protein, is produced in the inner surface of the skin. On the amount of collagen falling low, tiny depressions develop on the face and on its amount being too high, visible protrusions appear. Both these cases result in acne scars. Teenagers are generally the worst affected from acne as the hormone levels shoot up during puberty causing more sebum secretion.
Some of the typical factors that lead to an acne infection include consumption of medicines, regular use of oral contraceptives, applying beauty products that do not go with the skin type and genetic reasons. Various other reasons such as anxiety, improper eating habits, and even pollution can result in acne. It seems that every month, if not every week, different manufacturers are coming up with the latest digital cameras to entice potential clients. And it’s just not working for us!
After spending sizeable amount of time at the mall figuring out which is the best digital camera for us, we finally have enough money to buy for that eye-popping, 7 mega pixel, 10x digital zoom, potable, candy colored, up to 512MB expandable memory of super hi-speed SD memory card and not to mention very portable, (that will be the envy of almost everyone we know). We march to the mall armed with our life savings and lotsa pride in ourselves, when we pass by a new display – an eight mega pixel, up to 1G expandable memory, with built it mic and stereo surround, video playback capable, with 22 scenic modes kind-of-camera. And we sigh because the producer of this amazing gadget claims that this is the best digital camera yet out in the market. And so as we always want to have the best, armed with our life savings and a few credit cards, we buy the “best digital camera.” But then again, that doesn’t last too long, after two months or so, there’s another “best digital camera.” Read more...
