The latest trend to hit the consumer electronics market is LED Televisions. LED stands for light emitting diode so as the name suggests the television is composed of a large number LEDs which are used to produce a picture on your television screen. This might be a very simplistic explanation of things but this is how the technology works in a nutshell.

The term LED televisions is used mostly by Samsung electronics as well as other television manufacturers. Now even though the name suggests that there are a large number of LEDs in the television there are not as many as they should be to form a picture. What the LEDs do is they provide the LCD with the needed backlight hence making it able to produce picture perfect video.

There is quite a difference in terms of picture quality and technology as compared to conventional LCD TV technology. One of the biggest differences from a consumer’s point of view is that it produces very bright images. The television also produces much deeper blacks as compared to any other type of television technology.

Now LED Televisions are slim especially when it comes to Edge-LED technology. This technology helps television manufacturers manufacture much thinner televisions that have a far lower power consumption when compared to ordinary LCD televisions. This television is almost 40% more power efficient than regular LCD televisions on the market.

There is also a much wider color gamut the television can deal with as compared to regular LCDs. This is especially true in those areas where RGB type backlighting is also used.

LCD televisions use the conventional back light to light up the LCD panel. However on the other hand what LED Televisions use are an array of LED lights which are installed behind the LCD panel. The difference between edge technology and other technology is that is uses white LEDs which are placed around the sides of the panel and use special diffusion technology to light up the screen by spreading light behind the panel.

One of the biggest of the many benefits of having an LED backlight is that it offers a lower level of power consumption as well as very high brightness. When you compare it to conventional LCD lighting there are also color advantages. These are something which cannot be achieved with regular LCD technology. However one of the biggest barriers to wide usage of LED television is the cost of purchasing the unit. As time passes the prices are lowering though.

Various companies produce variations of these technologies. Also every brand of television does their own special thing with their television in order to make it more favourable. In a nutshell though this is what you can expect from these televisions.
