The story of an ordinary looking, clumsy teenager who finds out shes actually a princess of a tiny country called Genovia and her transformation into an elegant beauty under her Royal grandmothers tutelage, captured the attention and the hearts of viewers. Its success left the audience craving for more and so talks began for a sequel in the form of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement that takes the 15 year old geeky princess story forward.
Mias story in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie is taken up close to six years down the line by which time she gains a graduate degree and comes home to Genovia. In anticipation of her 21st birthday, Queen Clarisse makes up her mind to hand over her crown to Mia. Things then start to get complicated with Viscount Mabrey claiming that his nephew is the rightful heir to the throne and the parliament declaring that they will not allow an old rule ” that a queen must be married ” to be broken.
The young princess has only thirty days in which to find a husband while she also deals with the intrusive paparazzi and works to gain the crowds support. Adding to her problems is her increasing attraction towards Nicholas (Chris Pine), the nephew of Viscount Marbrey whos after the throne. Her alternate choice of husband is an Englishman (portrayed by Callum Blue), who though suitable in every way isnt the one who speeds up her heart beat. Mia is forced to choose between her heart and her country.
Actress Anne Hathaway continues to endear herself as the Princess while Julie Andrews as the elegant and mature Queen exudes magnetic appeal. Director Gary Marshall and the movies original cast work hard to create a light and fluffy romance flick that doesnt win any points for helping you develop life enhancing philosophies but certainly gets bonus points for allowing you to slip into a world of fantasy and escape the pressures and demands of your daily life.
The movie will most definitely be enjoyed by women of all ages and young men as well, especially those with a romantic heart. Whether the gentlemen will be brave enough to admit they enjoyed the movie is a different story altogether. The princess is modern and independent in her thinking and miles away from the traditional damsel in distress kind of fairy tale character.
